Our Story…
In the heart of Cornwall, The Roasting Room traces its origins to the passion and experience of Olly Jones. Olly's coffee journey began in Raglan, New Zealand, where he roasted specialty coffee for a surf shop with an affiliated roastery. Inspired by this experience, Olly seized the opportunity to bring his newfound expertise to Newquay upon his return.
According to Loz (Olly’s girlfriend), Olly's passion for coffee slowly unfolded, from morning rituals with Standart magazines to meticulously weighing every single shot for every single cup of coffee. The dedication became abundantly clear when the living room floor transformed into a workshop of dismantled coffee machines. The quest for quality coffee, sustainably sourced, expertly roasted, and lovingly brewed, became the cornerstone of The Roasting Room.
The birth of The Roasting Room (formerly grounded) was an unexpected fusion of COVID-era restlessness, a hint of audacity, and the serendipity of a well-placed Facebook marketplace ad. In 2021, while Olly worked as a firefighter and Loz as a dentist, they founded The Roasting Room. Seizing the opportunity to set up shop on Bank St, the first cafe was a whirlwind reality within ten days, a testament to the dedication of friends and family who rallied to make it happen. This venture reflects their shared dream, commitment to great coffee, and passion to create a community hub for coffee enthusiasts.
The Roasting Room quickly evolved from a mere cafe to a vibrant community hub, thanks to a warm reception from locals that exceeded expectations. Expanding the business became a reality, welcoming new and cherished staff, including Olly's mum, Bev, who crafts delightful cakes to this day. The journey commenced in the Bank St cafe, where Olly began roasting fresh coffee in the window on a small roaster, but demand soon outgrew the space, leading to the establishment of a dedicated roasting site, now located at Lanteague Studios in Zelah.
The Roasting Room
What began as a passion project for Olly has now become an integral part of our business.
The first coffee roaster was delivered to our roastery by Olly's dad on his Jewson's Lorry. The second was taken to pieces and built bit by bit in the shop. Both roasters have a story to tell and could be considered antiques!
We are passionate about sourcing high-quality, sustainably produced, delicious coffee. We believe roasting is an art and a science. Hand roasting in small batches allows us to ensure the quality is consistent from crop to cup!
